"The Mother of all Vigils"

This is how the Roman Missal (the book which specifies how Masses are to be celebrated) describes the Easter Vigil.

The quote, "mother of all vigils" comes from one of St. Augustine's Sermons written in the 5th century. In other words, the church is telling us, this is THE biggest night of the year, one in which we pull out all the stops. From the lighting of the fire and the new Paschal candle to the passing on of light and procession with candles, the singing of the beautiful, ancient "Exultet," the readings from the Old Testament that remind us of our salvation history that began with the Jewish people, the magnificent "Gloria" when candles are lit and the darkened church becomes brighter, to the singing of the "Alleluia" heard for the first time since Lent began...! All this tells us that we are God's People, and in the newly-baptized we see the Risen Christ!

It will be quieter and simpler this year, but no less stirring. You are invited to light a candle at home as the Paschal candle is lit and listen to the Exultet, a song of praise and thanksgiving for all the wonders God has done. There will be three Old Testaments readings this year, the Genesis story ("In the beginning!"), the tale of Abraham and his son, Isaac, and finally, the Exodus narrative of Moses leading the people across the Red Sea (the only reading that can never be excluded due to its importance in our salvation history).

As you listen and reflect on what these stories and rituals mean to you and your families, remember also those preparing for Baptism and those who have been initiated at Holy Cross in years past. Last year we welcomed two children and an adult into our parish community and the greater church. The memory of their happiness brings light to our lives this year as we celebrate who we are together in this great mystery of God's love.
